Founded in June 1952, the Queens Chapter of Jack and Jill of America, Inc. was established under the guidance of Emilie Pickens. Mrs. Pickens was also the first Vice President of the national organization. Our chapter is an organization of mothers whose objective is to impart constructive educational, civic, cultural, recreational and social programming to stimulate growth and development in our African-American children. We strive to nurture future leaders through outstanding chapter programming, community service, legislative advocacy and philanthropic giving.
The Queens Chapter of Jack and Jill of America, Inc. proudly presented the Jamaica YMCA with a sponsorship of instructional swim lessons for five youth attendees of the Y so they can learn how to swim. This sponsorship, which is in alignment with the national Jack and Jill of America, Inc.'s Jack and Jill Swims initiative, is just one of the ongoing projects that Queens J&J moms have with the Jamaica Y. Special thank you to (L-R) Sammantha Kaufman-Jones; Dr. Stacie NC Grant; Pres. Carmelia Taylor and Lisa Clark.
Did you know that April is Autism Awareness Month? In fact, April 2 was named World Autism Awareness Day in 2007! To show their support for increasing awareness and the importance of early diagnosis and early intervention, the Queens chapter wore shades of blue. Autism is a complex brain disorder that often inhibits a person's ability to communicate, respond to surroundings and to form relationships with others. Autism affects people of all races, ethnicities and socioeconomic backgrounds.
